Volvo Golf
Champions at the Royal Golf Club Bahrain
To cap the year off nicely, no pun intended! we have been
awarded another contract to supply temporary structures to IMG,
European Tour golf event.
After successfully completing the supply of temporary structures
to the Dubai World Championships last week, we received the news
that we have been awarded the contract to supply in excess of
2,500sqm of temporary structures to the inaugural
season-starting tournament on the European Tour schedule; The
Volvo Golf Champions. This will be hosted at The Royal Golf
Club, Bahrain between 27th and 30th January, and is being
organised by IMG.
A large selection of structures will be supplied from our award
winning Absolute and Ultimate range. 5m x 5m and 6m x 6m
Ultimate pagodas will be used for on course public catering
outlets and exhibition units, whilst a 15m wide Absolute Eclipse
with 5m deep external terrace will form the VIP hospitality
suite, raised on scaffold and situated adjacent to the 18th
Green.
Alex Robertson, Managing Director, comments: “We are thrilled to
have received this contract win at the back end of 2010. It will
be the first time we will supply to an event in Bahrain, and I
believe is testament to the work we have been doing to grow our
presence in the Middle East over the past few years. The New
Year is set to bring big changes with how we supply to the
Middle East, I look forward to bringing this news to you in due
course.”

No sooner have we
dismantled the Absolute double deckers at the Celtic Manor are
we jetting across to sunny Dubai to begin the build on another
Golf event: The Dubai World Championships, taking place at the
Jumeirah Golf Estate, this November.
After a successful first year, we were selected again to supply
temporary structures, decking and fencing to this world class
event which last year saw a staggering 59,228 visitors attending
over the 4 days.
This year we will supply 6,000sqm of temporary structures
including a state of the art Media Centre for the worlds media
utilising our flagship Absolute Eclipse structure, a stunning
95m long Peak Top Pavilion erected on scaffold at the 18th hole

catering and administration outlets.
“This will be the third golf event we have supplied to in 2010;
I believe it is testament to the standard of work we have given
to the European Tour over the years. Dubai certainly has a
different climate to Wales however we face the same brief: to
deliver world class facilities to a word class event, and that
is what we will do” says Darren Woodhouse, Global Events
Director, Owen Brown.
Rory Colville, Operations Director, Dubai World Championship

hope to build on this, with Owen Brown’s structures again
providing a spectacular backdrop to the climax of the Race to

Team Europe battled through the
elements last month, Stand Out Magazine, November issue
Team Europe
battled through the elements last month, declaring war on their
American counterparts and regaining the prestigious Ryder Cup.
Despite Team Europe’s brave and victorious win, event
professionals watching the epic golfing action would also
declare Team Event the winner, with its organisers, suppliers
and hospitality providers pulling out all the stops to ensure
minimal disruption and a safe event.
Unforgiving
periods of torrential rain crashed down on spectators at Celtic
Manor Resort, Wales; the redesigned Twenty Ten course taking a
battering from the elements, and on occasions looking more like
a paddling pool.
The relentless
downpours and decision to cancel play on more than one occasion
led spectators and pundits to raise just one question, over and
over again. Why did the organisers choose to play golf in Wales,
in October? It was bound to rain, they said. Now, professionals
are beginning to question the Ryder Cup’s choice of Gleneagles
in 2014, when the tournament is scheduled to happen later in the
year.
George O’Grady,
chief executive of the European Tour, says that the decision of
when to hold the event is based upon the availability of the
players, an issue which is more of a problem in the USA and one
that the PGA and TV schedulers have promised to address.
Scheduling
issues aside, the inclement conditions failed to dampen the
spirit of the spectators, despite being told to wait in their
cars for hours on end at the East and West Park and ride venues
when the site was closed to golf fans over fears for health and
safety.
For the first
time in the event’s history, the weather forced organisers to
extend into an extra day, with suppliers pulling out all the
stops to accommodate extra hospitality requirements and
rearrange load out schedules.
Perfect(ee)
Owen Brown
erected three double deck pavilions totalling over 5.000 square
metres on the Twenty Ten Golf Course.
The structures
were used for The Kidwelly private hospitality suite located
above the 16th green and fairway as well as The
Caerphilly private hospitality suite and the Conwy Club, a
shared restaurant facility, both located above the 17th
green.
Each of the Owen
Brown structures supplied were constructed on scaffolding
sub-structures to guarantee guests unrivalled views of the
action on the course. The Castle Donington-based structure
supplier contracted RIM Scaffolding to erect the platforms with
build commencing in July.
Explained Darren
Woodhouse, events director at GL events Owen Brown:
“We pitched for
much of the Ryder Cup work but the organisers chose to split the
contract three equal ways. The job is far too much for one
contractor because it is a difficult job to work on.
Luckily, the
weather did not impact on our build and we began to build the
structures in August.”
All three
structures required scaffolding platforms. The Conwy and
Caerphilly suites were Absolute Eclipse structures with
five-metre external balconies, compared to the Kidwelly private
hospitality suite, a Premier pavilion with a Galeria roof.
Crew fluctuated
between 12 and 20 and then dropped to four as the team neared
completion at the end of September.
Owen Brown
managed the fit out and carpeting, with Aggreko and Andyloos
installing the air conditioning and toilets respectively.
Woodhouse and his team worked alongside Seamless and Detail on
the structures’ interiors; classic cream interiors complemented
the glazed windows, painted timber cladding and chrome finishes.
In total, 40
artics of kit travelled to Wales and entered the site via
backroads to lessen the impact on club members trying to access
the course. Fit out was on-going throughout the build and
gathered pace in the final weeks.
Woodhouse
continued: “we rented a farm, five miles from the site, to store
stillages and excess kit, as nothing could be stored at the
course, and we had to keep the area we worked in as tidy as
possible to ensure a smooth process especially as we were
working alongside other contractors”
The Kidwelly
hospitality suite was the largest structure supplied by Owen
Brown, measuring 16-metres wide and 100-metres long. Hospitality
inside the double decker structure was managed by Mecco. The
suite’s size dictated the need for double deck toilet block and
double deck kitchen.
Plus, for the
first time, Owen Brown installed and showcased its new automatic
guest lift system, which will from now on feature on all future
double deck and triple deck projects.
The hospitality
suites hosted between 30 and 250 guests with the Conwy offering
open hospitality and a shared facility, compared to the
Caerphilly and Kidwelly pavilions, which hosted private boxes
hired specifically for the occasion. Clients had the option to
choose specific carpet colours to match their branding whilst
the remaining interiors were left cream and balconies featured
artificial grass.
According to
Woodhouse, the rain made the event more of a challenge. Not for
the structure providers, however, but for the staff on-sit in
general. Four crew remained at the course on standby to deal
with any queries.
Woodhouse adds:
“the extra day’s play hasn’t had much of an impact. We’ve had to
move the schedule slightly but the contract we signed stipulates
unforeseen circumstances so there’s not much you can do. We will
still have cleared the site by the end of the month.
“Our focus now
turns to the Dubai World Championships where we are supplying
1.600 square metres of structures. Build begins on October 23
and we hand over on November 13.We then begin work on the FIFA
Club World Cup and Dubai Rugby Sevens in early December. The
Middle East is a focus of attention for us.

See the first images of our Absolute Multi Deck structures at
The Ryder Cup
With the rain plagued Ryder Cup now over with victory going to
Europe we are pleased to be able to issue the first photographs
of our Absolute double deck hospitality suites, which were
certainly needed during the downpours that Wales encountered
that weekend.
We erected three Absolute double deck pavilions totalling over
5,000sqm on the Twenty Twenty Golf Course. The structures were
used for The Kidwelly private hospitality suite located above
the 16th green and fairway as well as The Caerphilly
private hospitality suite and The Conwy Club, which is a shared
restaurant facility, both are located above the 17th
green.
Double deck kitchen and washroom facilities’ have been attached
to all structures and a guest lift has been installed in each
structure.
All of the Owen Brown structures were constructed on raised
platforms to guarantee guests unrivalled views of the action on
the course.
Darren Woodhouse, Events Director for Owen Brown comments “We
are proud to be involved with the Ryder Cup. The Celtic Manor is
a fantastic location and our three structures are set provide
stunning hospitality facilities’ for guests at this world famous
event”.
Edward Kitson, Ryder Cup Match Director, commented: “We are
delighted to be working with Owen Brown for the first time at

course will have unrivalled panoramic views of the Usk Valley
and form a spectacular backdrop for our guests.”

A Job Well Done at Silverstone, Premier Construction, Midlands
Feature, August 2010
An event of the
scale of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone requires event
management of the utmost precision. Thanks to an array of
temporary structures, this year’s event has been hosted with the
usual smoothness and panache.
GL Events Owen
Brown are the sole supplier of temporary structures at this
event, a contract which this year saw them supplying a massive
14,705sqm. Structures are used for applications including high
end hospitality suites such as the famous Copse Corner
hospitality suite, general admission catering and bar areas,
administrative facilities, changing areas, information points,
media centres and even helipad terminals. The Silverstone
helipad terminal becomes one of the busiest airports in the UK
during the weekend of the British Grand Prix.
Owen Brown
supplied structures from their whole product portfolio including
their new Absolute and Ultimate ranges. Two huge 145m long
Absolute Pavilions with a Eclipse curved roof profile were used
for the Copse Corner hospitality suites; both were divided into
individual hospitality chalets. Owen Brown also supplied the
private club house, a 15m x 25 Absolute Pavilion with a 15m²
canopy, for the British Racing Drivers Club which was used by ex
Formula 1 drivers including Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell.
The Absolute Pavilions and Ultimate Pagodas were part of Owen
Brown’s £4.5million 2009 investment in a new range of temporary
structures aimed at the outdoor events industry. The structures
were designed with events like Silverstone in mind. The Absolute
is flexible to a host of different event applications it comes
in a single, double or triple decker, with optional balconies or
terraces, a choice of three roof profiles and a host of interior
décor options including segmenting the structure into individual
hospitality suites. The Ultimate was designed to be a practical
unit for such things as administration areas, it can stand alone
or
be linked together to form larger retail units or linked to
another structure from the Owen Brown range to form an entrance
way or break out room.
Ben Keast, project
manager for Owen Brown, commented, “The British Grand Prix event
takes such a high volume of structures and is one of our largest
supply contracts that it is never without some challenges. The
main challenge we face each year is fitting the build of the
structures around other events on Silverstone’s busy events
calendar. We do this by meticulously planning the build
schedule, crew numbers and logistics to ensure equipment arrives
on time and in the right order. We have project managers that
have worked on the Silverstone site for the past 25 years; this
knowledge, coupled with our experienced build team, ensures a
smooth build project. In addition to this, the structures we
supplied this year needed to reflect the facelift Silverstone
has undergone for 2010. I believe our new Absolute Pavilions
with Eclipse curved roofs and Ultimate Pagodas helped to
achieved this new look”.
The Silverstone track has suffered criticism over recent years
and it has been well documented that it came close to losing its
place on the Formula One calendar. Silverstone Race Circuit
sought investment and is now working on a new pit and paddock
complex set to be complete in 2011. The paddock complex will
include new garages, a media centre, a race control building,
new hospitality and VIP spectator zones and a primary paddock.
This will all help to bring Silverstone into the 21st Century.
Alex Robertson,
managing director of the leading temporary structure supplier,
commented, “Our 60 year relationship with the British Grand Prix
is still going strong. We have men on site at Silverstone for
several months before the event, allowing us to be flexible with
the build schedule and adapt quickly to any changes in the
brief. We work closely with the interior decorators chosen by
Silverstone to ensure a high end finish is given to all level of
structures”.
GL events Owen
Brown has provided temporary structures to the British Grand
Prix since its conception in 1950 and at the Silverstone Circuit
for over 25 years. Richard Phillips, managing director of
Silverstone Circuits Ltd 2010, thanked the events team for
another invaluable contribution to sporting showpiece:
“Considering we had less than six full months to get up and
running, I think everything involved performed exceptionally
well and the racing weekend’s tremendous success is entirely
down to an outstanding team effort”.

Owen Brown Support the Bloodhound Project, July 2010
This weekend at
the Farnborough Air Show leading temporary structure supplier GL events
Owen Brown is supporting the Bloodhound Project with the display of a
replica version of their 42ft long Bloodhound SuperSonic Car (SSC) by
providing a temporary exhibition venue.
The Bloodhound Project asked Owen Brown for a temporary venue with a
difference. The venue needed to act as a dramatic showroom for the
replica car and exhibition area for the Bloodhound Project whilst also
allowing visitors to the exhibit to be able to view the daily flying
displays from within the structure.
Owen Brown proposed a clear view Premier structure with a peak top clear
view Atrium applied to one end to create an impressive showroom to
exhibit this dramatic piece of British engineering and design.
Jo Finch Commerical Events Manager for the Bloodhound Project commented
“the clear view roofs have created quite a talking point at the show; it
is great that visitors to our exhibit don’t need to step outside to
watch the daily flying displays.”
Next year the Bloodhound Project hopes to claim the land speed record.
In order to do this the SSC will have to improve on 763mph, the record
previously set in 1997 by the Thrust SuperSonic Car.

Relationship continues
with BADA, April
2010
Our
long term temporary structure supply contract has been extended with the
BADA Fair off the back of an investment in a custom designed shop front
window effect.
“We
wanted the BADA Fair’s reception to look like a shop window. We created
a bespoke display area and the larger windows created a much lighter and
airier room” said Gillian Craig, Director BADA Fair.
We
supplied 5,000sqm of structures to the Fair; in addition to the
reception, the structures housed the main exhibition area, a restaurant
and brasserie, kitchens and administration areas all within the confines
of the running track at Duke of York’s Headquarters, Chelsea.
The
structure we provided for the reception was a 16m x 20m Premier
Pavilion, the windows come in 5m bays usually with five 1m wide window
panels and six supporting uprights. After the request from the event’s
organiser, we manufactured an eave beam that would take the weight of
only three uprights. Two 5m wide Perspex panels would then sit either
side of a central upright to create the shop front window.
Keith
Bishop, Director comments “We are really impressed with the effect this
window style gives. By being flexible with our structure’s design we
have retained a long standing customer. We hope to utilise this window
design for other events.”

GL
continues to invest in future,
Stand
Out Magazine, March 2010
Keith Bishop, director of GL events Owen Brown, is
spearheading a suitability programme
for GL events Owen Brown and Snowdens.
The programme’s aim is to reduce the carbon footprint
of the company’s structures; this includes implementing measures
throughout the life of the structure including carpet recycling and the
re-use of water as well as the environmentally-friendly disposal of the
structures at the end of their life.
With the help of supply partners, Snowdens
has already begun to recycle resin back polypropylene
carpet; with some 6,000 square metres recycled
from December 2009 events. Talks have also begun with Texiloop to assist
with the recycling of wall panels and PVC roof.
Meanwhile, GL events Owen Brown is continuing with its
investment in new Absolute and Ultimate temporary structures, following
an initial £4.5 million outlay in 2009. In 2010, plans to
increase its range of products and services, with interior design and
fit out, signage and temporary seating to be added to its portfolio.
2010 will see GL invest £9 million it its European structures divisions;
this will be in excess of £2 million dedicated to the UK operation.

GL events Owen Brown Sailing Along in the Middle East, February 2010
We provided
7,000sqm of temporary structures for exhibition areas and hospitality
suites to the Abu Dhabi Yacht Show (ADYS) held at the Yas Marina Circuit
last month.
This is the second ADYS and the only annual exhibition dedicated to the
superyacht and megayacht sectors in the Middle East. 15,000 people
visited the three day event.
Darren Woodhouse, Global Events Director said "It is always great to be
involved in such a prestigious event. Exposure at these types of events
is excellent for
GL events Owen Brown.
Our aim for 2010 is to build on the success of this event and the work
we did at the Dubai World Championship last year and increase our
presence in the Middle East."

Out Of the Woods,
Access All Areas
Magazine, February 2010
Temporary structure providers focused on quality, service and value
for money in tougher times. Lisa Gudge talks to suppliers of some
alternative options about new opportunities and the coming year.
GL events Owen Brown had a solid year following significant investment
in its Absolute product ahead of the 2009 season.
“Obviously we committed long before the recession hit,” managing
director, Alex Robertson, told this magazine last spring. “The market is
hugely challenging. But a brand new structure is very different to
something that’s been on the hire market for a couple of seasons, and
we’re not asking a premium price for it, giving our clients the
opportunity to hold their margins and prices.”
“We supplied new Absolute structures at the likes of Epsom, Ascot and
Silverstone, and to the inaugural Dubai World Championship golf
tournament in November,” group operations director Scott Hayward tells
Access. “The response was very positive, and we’ve invested
another £4m in ‘phase two’.”
The company is set to roll out double and triple deck structures in the
Absolute range, and has new contracts in place at the World Cup in South
Africa, via parent company GL, and the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in
October. The investment has also encompassed the smaller end. Its
‘Ultimate’ pagodas are designed to raise the standard of entrance,
linking or smaller standalone structures.
“These can be the first thing visitors to and event see,” Hayward
continues. “We’ve tried to get away from the white cube by carrying the
aesthetic of the Absolute across into the Ultimate. They’re the same
eave height as our larger structures, so you get the same doors, the
same glazing and hard wall panelling, the same quality as the rest of
the structure.” |

Abu Dhabi Yacht Show,
Stand Out Magazine, February 2010
GL events Owen Brown are
supplying temporary structures in excess of 7000
square metres from its Absolute range to
the Abu Dhabi Yacht Show (ADYS) at
the newly completed Yas Marina Circuit.
This is
the second ADYS and is the only annual exhibition dedicated to the
superyacht and megayacht sectors in the Middle East.
The 2009 ADYS saw sales
of yachts totalling over US$200 million. 2010 has been tipped to be even
bigger with 120 exhibitors expected at the event.
Darren Woodhouse, Director of Global Events, said "This is great news
for us, the client saw the quality of our finished product at the recent
Dubai World Championship golf and felt that we could deliver what they
wanted, another positive step for
GL events Owen Brown International
Division".
